ao3 is a medieval feast and i am a drunken lord slamming my goblet down on the table and yelling “bring me the most fucked up shit in all the realm!!!”
It is actually very hard to find fucked up shit on AO3. The majority is romance, with the happily ever after being part of the genre.
One time I read several fics from the unhappy ending tag in a certain fandom, desperate for some fucked up shit relating to these characters.
Like half the fics were shorts about the wrong ship getting together while the character who should be in the pairing watches the wedding tearfully. This is not fucked up.
The most popular fic in the tag was about one character dying in a heroic way and the other being sad and also they kiss. This is not fucked up.
The second most popular fic in the tag was about a character with hanahaki disease going for a medical treatment to remove it rather than confessing his love. This is not fucked up.
I like grimdark stuff and tragedies and I was willing to give Ao3 way more of a chance than it deserved.
the ocean has the most nightmarish organisms imaginable but if you stand on the beach with a little toy bucket you’re not exactly going to scoop up cthulhu
you need to actually dig into the really fucked up tags and start scrolling past the popular stuff if you want to get into the deep dark shit. unhappy ending is not gonna do it. consider snuff.
yeah, believe me, if you weren’t finding fucked up shit it’s because you weren’t searching for it properly, I have SEEN THINGS.
(this is not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. some of the fucked up shit was really good.)
