I’M TENTATIVELY FUCKING STOKED AT THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

image

To those of you expressing skepticism and a lack of trust in WotC, you’re RIGHT. Wizards ruined a lot of good will, and it’s gonna take time and effort to earn that back. But here’s the other end of the stick that’s gonna get me accused of bootlicking:

You gotta be open to letting them earn your patronage and trust again. I’m not saying jump back in with both feet immediately. What I AM saying is that if they suffer all this backlash, make the objectively correct decision to walk it back, and then see ass-all result from them apologizing, (in a very corporate way, but still, it’s something, and this time backed up with additional action,) there’s nothing stopping execs next time. They’ll just see it as, “well, when we tried to fix it, it didn’t help, so let’s just do the profit thing”

I said I’m tentatively stoked. I’m less angry now. I’d say I’m not even angry at wizards. It’s like I just had a big argument with them, and they finally said, “sorry, you’re right.” The anger is gone, but there’s still a lot there for me to process. But I’m open to them earning my trust again.

or we could still just not give them money and do away with needing an ogl owned by a corporation altogether by supporting the orc license, which will not be owned by any corporation. this way we won’t find ourselves in a position in the future where apparently we have to give a corporation money to make sure they know they did the right thing. to me at this point there is no reason to care what wizards thinks about whether they should do the right thing. they dug themselves into this hole and as far as i’m concerned i can help bury them in it the rest of the way by refusing to give them any money. none of us owe them anything for this decision. corporations are not and never will be ur friend and u do not need to accept an apology from them, especially when it was over something this drastic. for gaming like this to be truly open we need to get these sorts of things out of the hands of corporations full stop

@demongirlhorns is correct here. @dungeonmastersconsortium said something that a lot of people are saying, which I find utterly baffling:

“You gotta be open to letting them earn your patronage and trust again.”

Why? Seriously, why?

WotC have lied and schemed throughout this justifiable outrage, and in the end, they still make no promised about the next edition. I guarantee that the edition that is released next year will require anyone who wants to make content for it use the new OGL.

Leaving the old OGL untouched for now is a loss for them, and a win for the community (a partial win), but it absolutely is not a sign they are suddenly deserving of trust and support. They are not.

This is a fun video:

This is also why we have things like the ORC on the way which, although being paid for by a company, will be handed over to an impartial trust similar to what’s being used for Creative Commons. Also with recent announcements this just means they are halting these plans for 5e, we don’t know what they’re going to do for 6e.

I’m not going to get into too many details because others have done it better but as a parting note, please just try other systems, it won’t kill you and you might learn something.

They’re literally saying that 5.1 is going to be under a Creative Commons licence. Not similar to, an actual perpetual Creative Commons licence. You do not have to go back to them, of course, but people were so loud that they are taking steps to make sure that they actually can’t go back on this one. This is specifically because people were like “how do we know that you won’t try this again” so they had to respond to that.
