I thought there might be a lot of other people who would benefit from reading this, too.

Ok, one thing I know as a fact is that the government can not make you pay back all of your CERB money in big payments. It'll be taken the same way that taxes are deducted off of your paychecks. For me personally, I don't think that's going to happen either way because I was working consistently up until my workplace shut down. If you didn't have a job in the first place, you got by without the money before and I don't see why you need it when there are others that most definitely do.
What are you talking about anon?
“If you didn’t have a job in the first place, you got by without the money before and I don’t see why you need it when there are others that most definitely do.“
So fuck the poor is your general argument? Only people who had jobs before deserve to survive a pandemic?
Many people did not survive other events like this and will not survive this pandemic without help, especially low income people without jobs.
We got by without the money because we know how to budget what we did have.
We do not know how to budget a pandemic.
Nobody does.
Not even big banks.
I’m on disability and I can get by in a month with what I’m used to. My usual routine was to buy cheap and buy often to prevent spoilage.
Now, I can’t. Not only am I forced to settle for more expensive alternatives to what I normally get most of the time, but I am also buying things that I wouldn’t normally and in much larger quantities, such as hand sanitizer, gloves, and cleaning supplies, because I go through it faster. I am strongly immunocompromised and getting covid would, at the very least, mean a lengthy hospital stay for me. In which my survival will NOT be prioritized because I am an unattractive, indigenous, disabled lesbian.
Poor people deserve to live, and I don’t understand why this is so hard for some people to grasp. We can get by in normal circumstances. Getting by does not mean living comfortably. It means literally starving for 10 days out of the month because disability payments are less than half of what is required to survive. It means never being able to afford new clothes and begging family members to treat you to a new pair of pants from the thrift store, and crying from guilt. But we got by.
These are not normal circumstances.
also on ODSP here, and I’m not getting the CERB money because I also was not working
but I can confirm that the cost of living rises during a pandemic, when smaller independant stores (grocery stores for example) are closed
I was getting by on my ODSP checks without a job before, but since quarantine started I have had to dip into what was my savings and it’s starting to run dry
and I’m one of the unemployed people who is getting government support, so can you even imagine what it’s like for someone who isn’t?
“if you didn’t have a job in the first place, you got by without money before and I don’t see why you need it now when others most definitely do” is some class A bullshit!!
we live in a fucked up capitalist society, absolutely no one gets by without money
those without money are starving on the street when we aren’t in the midst of a pandemic, let alone when they’re getting fined for gathering in public or sleeping in city parks
the sheer privilege and lack of empathy radiating off of this ask is sickening
Our apartment building burned down 2 weeks ago. About a fifth of the people in the building were working, the rest are disabled, solo parents, and students who were planning on getting jobs in the Summer. My roommate had 7 job interviews cancelled because of covid. I make my money selling home made crafts at the farmers’ markets that aren’t happening now even if I hadn’t lost my entire year’s stock that I had been working on since last September. That means 80% of us are not eligible for CERB, we’ve got shitty landlords who are refusing to give us our April rent or damage deposits back (fire was on the 8th) AND won’t let us back into the units that weren’t burned to try to salvage anything because “any belongings left in the unit at the termination of tenancy become the property of the landlord”.
Oh yeah, our rent was $850 a month. To get a similar apartment now is at least $1600. If anyone would rent to us that is. Despite having excellent references that go back almost 10 years we’ve been told no by every rental we’ve applied for because we are from the building that burned down. There are 42 families in the same boat as us.
When we are in a place where we can start rebuilding our lives, everything is in supremely high demand and super expensive right now. Try to buy a cheap shitty laptop or tablet at Walmart just so you can fill out rental application forms online (because that’s the only way anyone takes them now) and try not to get discouraged by the fact that they are out of stock of anything cheaper than $600 before tax because everyone bought their kids 3 to help keep them distracted during isolation. Take your emergency services $150 and go buy clothes that you can’t try on OR return if they don’t fit and remember you can’t wash them either because all the laundromats are shut.
You can miss me with this “Poor people were doing fine before it’s those of us who were doing well enough to have a better lifestyle and get some savings going who need the most help” bullshit. There are 85 other people in this hotel until Saturday with no where to go afterwards who would stand with me on that if you wanna fight about it anon, and some of them are still going to work from here.

I saw an online tutorial about how to make masks from old clothes, so I cut up this old pair of shorts! I had to hand sew it, and it came out too small, but it’s not bad for a first try! What do you think?
