In case you’ve missed the upheaval, Techno chose the best possible way of celebrating April Fool’s. In order:
1. His Twitch account, which he uses to only for watching others but which has been quietly gaining followers for a few months now, suddenly went live.
2. When confused people went to check it out, there was a black “starting soon” screen with excellent, chill music.
3. Over the course of an hour, 55,000 people watched a black screen with an air of “I know it’s a joke, but what if it isn’t?” The chat was going a mile a minute with people laughing, baffled, spamming memes, and a handful genuinely hopeful that there would be a stream
4. A few times, the text was edited. Once, in the middle, Techno’s voice came in to say he was having technical difficulties, and stream would start soon. The “users in chat” kept showing various people - Phil, Tommy, Will. All in all, it was just enough to keep chat convinced that something would happen.
5. Twitter exploded. Victoria The Description Woman documented our laughter. The sheer confusion caused by the fact that it is not yet April Fool’s in the USA caused a terrifying amount of hope that there would actually be a stream. Honestly, this was my favorite part.
6. The whole thing took on a bit of the air of an ARG, with watchers scouring the screen and music choices, and flooding out to alert their friends with every change. Everyone was confused. I need to emphasize that at this point over 50,000 people had been watching a blank screen for an hour.
7. The music goes off. The screen goes dark. Chat holds their collective breath. A webcam goes on- and it’s Tommy. He’s facing backwards in his chair, and does a dramatic villain spin to the camera. He can only keep a straight face for a few seconds, then bursts out laughing, followed by the sound of the other Sleepy Bois losing it behind him.
8. In the middle of laughter, stream ends. Chat is left to scream, laugh, and flood back to Ranboo et al to deal with what just happened.
At this point, Technoblade has gained over 60,000 followers in two hours on a platform he does not use, and is about to break 200k. This puts him at #4,000 in all of Twitch. Tommy’s alt twitch channel has been hemorrhaging followers as frustrated people/jokers “leave.” I will say again that, for the vast majority of people, this is the funniest possible thing they could have done.
Finally, as Ranboo mentioned I think the best follow-up would be an apology video. I’m taking submissions for the format, but my current proposal is a Discord recording of them in a call but not talking, with a text-to-speech bot reading out an apology copypasta.
In an incredibly important update, the collective screams of 50,000 fans have caused Phil’s wife to trend on Twitter:
