Anonymous asked: How do you do online movie nights? Do you use some sort of website to sync up the movies? Do yu have discord open or something to chat while you're watching? I've been thinking of doing this with some friends who live far away and I'm curious of your methods.

eponymous-rose:

Discord has a very handy “go live” feature you can use to share your screen in a voice chatroom! Syncing up the movie/show is also very doable with something as simple as a countdown (which I think is how we did it back in the ollllld DS9 watch party days).

Piggybacking off this to sing the praises of this really remarkable and seamless feature Discord has natively! (As a reminder, Discord is free!) In your server, once you have a voice chatroom set up, hop into that guy and look for the new Go Live! icon in the bottom left.

Once you hit that, it pops up a window that asks what application (or whole screens!) you want to share with your friends.

Just pick the window with the movie you want to share (or the screen, if you want to share the whole thing), and it’ll ask you to confirm. Hit Go Live & you’re up!

Once you’re up, a little LIVE icon pops up next to your name in the chat, and your stream window displays in the bottom left. Friends can double-click on your name to join your stream. Sound is transmitted and everything! (The host does control the master volume, which is affected by their own in-app volume controls, so they need to make sure it’s turned up, but the watchers can turn it down individually as well.)

Quality-wise, it’s been EXCELLENT for us. It’s certainly a little pixelated in high-action scenes, but it’s extremely watchable and subtitles have never been an issue in terms of visibility or quality. It’s been tons of fun and way easier than going through those shady group chat rooms like rabbit, or trying to get five people to hit PLAY at the same time.

Highly recommended! It’s been basically seamless so far!
